Viva Fiesta…con cuidado

The San Antonio Convention and Visitors Bureau estimates that 3.5 million revelers will take part in San Antonio’s annual party. And, along with the parades, cascarones, medals and rich foods, the adult beverages flow freely. While letting go and enjoying the celebration interweaves this week of fun, it’s important to remember to celebrate safely – a responsibility on everyone’s shoulders. We should also remember that this week of Fiesta is about raising money for several very deserving charitable organizations.

Last year, there were five alcohol-related deaths during Fiesta. This year, there have already been more than 100 drunk driving arrests. And, these are on the heels of the city losing a police officer – a young woman with a toddler — to a wrong-way drunk driver. If you’re going to imbibe, give your keys to someone. If you’re with a group, designate one person in the group to be the non-drinking driver. Or, take advantage of the free designated driver program offered during Fiesta: San Antonio Taxis at 210-444-2222 or Yellow Cab at: 210-222-2222.

If you’re serving alcohol, follow the rules. Stop serving your customer(s) before they have had too much. Offer plenty of food and non-alcoholic alternatives. Call a cab for that customer who needs one. It’s everyone’s responsibility to make Fiesta memorable – and safe. Viva Fiesta!
